Weighted Russian Twist legs up

Instructions

1
Sit on the floor or bench with knees bent and feet secured or held by a partner. Hold a weighted plate or dumbbell across your chest with both hands. Recline back to approximately 45 degrees with torso at an angle to the floor.
2
Position feet firmly on ground with knees bent at approximately 90 degrees. Secure weight against chest at mid-sternum level. Engage core and maintain neutral spine alignment throughout the movement.
3
Slowly lower your torso backward by extending through the lumbar spine, moving in a controlled manner. Keep the weight pressed against chest and maintain tension in abdominal muscles. Lower until you feel a stretch in the abs, typically 30-45 degrees from vertical.
4
Drive through the abdominal muscles to flex the spine and pull the torso back upward toward the knees. Exhale as you contract the rectus abdominis, returning to the starting position. Pause briefly at the top before repeating.

Overview

If you want to isolate and overload the Rectus Abdominis, the Weighted Russian Twist legs up is an excellent addition to your routine. The mechanics of this Strength exercise specifically bias the Waist, while the use of Weighted allows for a smooth, natural resistance curve.

Benefits

  • Significantly enhances the structural integrity and power of the Rectus Abdominis.
  • Improves overall Waist stability and proprioception during heavy loads.
  • Allows for a natural movement path that closely mimics functional daily activities.

Common Mistakes

  • Using excessive momentum to swing the Weighted rather than controlling the eccentric phase.
  • Rushing the repetition tempo instead of focusing on the mind-muscle connection with the Waist.
  • Failing to achieve a full range of motion, which drastically limits Rectus Abdominis engagement.

Pro Tips

If you feel this primarily in your joints rather than the Rectus Abdominis, instantly lower the weight and readjust your Weighted setup.

Muscle Anatomy
