Walking Lunge

Instructions

1
Stand with feet hip-width apart, body upright, arms at sides or crossed over chest, core engaged, looking forward with neutral spine
2
Keep weight distributed evenly across both feet with slight forward lean from ankles, prepare legs for explosive movement by maintaining neutral knee alignment
3
Lower body by bending knees and hips simultaneously, descending into a squat position with chest upright and knees tracking over toes until thighs reach approximately parallel to ground
4
Explosively extend hips and knees to drive upward, propelling body off ground into vertical jump, landing softly by allowing knees to bend and absorbing impact through entire lower body before returning to standing position

Overview

Focusing on the Walking Lunge allows you to target the Quadriceps with precision. As a foundational Strength exercise, the integration of Body weight provides the necessary tension to trigger hypertrophy, while avoiding excessive joint strain.

Benefits

  • Allows for a natural movement path that closely mimics functional daily activities.
  • Acts as a highly scalable Strength movement, perfect for both beginners and elite athletes.
  • Improves overall Hips, Thighs stability and proprioception during heavy loads.

Common Mistakes

  • Shrugging the shoulders or compensating with secondary muscles rather than isolating the Quadriceps.
  • Losing core tension, leading to poor spinal alignment and reduced power output.
  • Using excessive momentum to swing the Body weight rather than controlling the eccentric phase.
  • Failing to achieve a full range of motion, which drastically limits Quadriceps engagement.

Muscle Anatomy

The primary driver is the Quadriceps. However, the movement also recruits Gluteus Maximus, Hamstrings, Gastrocnemius, Adductors to maintain control of the Body weight.

Beginner Tips

If you are new to the Walking Lunge , focus on mastering the movement pattern with zero weight before adding Body weight.
