Trap Bar Farmers Carry

Instructions

1
Stand upright with feet hip-width apart, holding a barbell across the front of your shoulders with hands slightly wider than shoulder-width. Keep your chest up, core engaged, and weight distributed evenly through your feet.
2
Take a deep breath and brace your core. Position the barbell securely on your anterior deltoids with elbows pointing forward. Ensure your torso remains upright throughout the movement.
3
Lower your body by bending at the hips and knees simultaneously, descending in a controlled manner until your thighs reach parallel to the ground or slightly below. Keep your chest up, knees tracking over your toes, and weight in your heels.
4
Drive through your heels and extend your hips and knees explosively to return to the starting position. Exhale as you drive upward, maintaining an upright torso and controlled barbell position throughout the concentric phase.

Overview

If you want to isolate and overload the Quadriceps, the Trap Bar Farmers Carry is an excellent addition to your routine. The mechanics of this Strength exercise specifically bias the Thighs, while the use of Body weight allows for a smooth, natural resistance curve.

Benefits

  • Significantly enhances the structural integrity and power of the Quadriceps.
  • Utilizes Body weight to create sustained mechanical tension, forcing deep muscle adaptation.
  • Improves overall Thighs stability and proprioception during heavy loads.
  • Promotes balanced muscular development by effectively recruiting the Quadriceps and associated synergists.
  • Acts as a highly scalable Strength movement, perfect for both beginners and elite athletes.

Common Mistakes

  • Rushing the repetition tempo instead of focusing on the mind-muscle connection with the Thighs.
  • Shrugging the shoulders or compensating with secondary muscles rather than isolating the Quadriceps.
  • Losing core tension, leading to poor spinal alignment and reduced power output.

Muscle Anatomy

The primary driver is the Quadriceps. However, the movement also recruits Gluteus Maximus, Hamstrings, Gastrocnemius, Soleus to maintain control of the Body weight.
