1
Stand with feet shoulder-width apart, arms at sides, core engaged, and spine in neutral alignment with shoulders relaxed
2
Raise one arm overhead while maintaining an upright posture and neutral spine position, preparing for lateral flexion movement
3
Slowly laterally flex the torso by bending sideways away from the raised arm, allowing the abdominal muscles to lengthen on the working side while keeping the hips stable and level

Overview

When programming for Rectus Abdominis growth, the Standing Side Bend stands out as a highly efficient Strength choice. Performing this movement with Body weight forces your stabilizer muscles to work in tandem with the primary movers, translating to functional strength and enhanced muscular endurance.

Benefits

  • Promotes balanced muscular development by effectively recruiting the Rectus Abdominis and associated synergists.
  • Allows for a natural movement path that closely mimics functional daily activities.
  • Reduces the likelihood of Waist injuries by reinforcing connective tissue strength.
  • Significantly enhances the structural integrity and power of the Rectus Abdominis.
  • Acts as a highly scalable Strength movement, perfect for both beginners and elite athletes.

Common Mistakes

  • Failing to achieve a full range of motion, which drastically limits Rectus Abdominis engagement.
  • Rushing the repetition tempo instead of focusing on the mind-muscle connection with the Waist.
  • Shrugging the shoulders or compensating with secondary muscles rather than isolating the Rectus Abdominis.

Muscle Anatomy

The primary driver is the Rectus Abdominis. However, the movement also recruits Obliquus Externus, Obliquus Internus, Transverse Abdominis, Hip Flexors to maintain control of the Body weight.
