Standing Air Bike

Instructions

1
Stand with feet hip-width apart, arms at sides or in running position, core engaged, and posture upright with shoulders back
2
Prepare by positioning feet directly under hips, engaging core muscles, and preparing arms in running motion (one arm forward, one back) to assist with momentum
3
Lower the body by flexing the hip and knee of one leg, bringing the knee up toward chest while maintaining upright torso position and forward momentum
4
Drive through the planted leg to extend the hip and knee explosively, lifting the opposite knee high toward chest in a running motion, then alternate legs in continuous repetition

Overview

The Standing Air Bike is an incredibly effective Strength, Cardio movement designed to fully engage the Quadriceps. By utilizing Body weight, this exercise emphasizes a deep stretch and a powerful contraction, making it a cornerstone for anyone looking to optimize their Waist development.

Benefits

  • Acts as a highly scalable Strength, Cardio movement, perfect for both beginners and elite athletes.
  • Utilizes Body weight to create sustained mechanical tension, forcing deep muscle adaptation.
  • Promotes balanced muscular development by effectively recruiting the Quadriceps and associated synergists.

Common Mistakes

  • Using excessive momentum to swing the Body weight rather than controlling the eccentric phase.
  • Rushing the repetition tempo instead of focusing on the mind-muscle connection with the Waist.
  • Shrugging the shoulders or compensating with secondary muscles rather than isolating the Quadriceps.
  • Losing core tension, leading to poor spinal alignment and reduced power output.

Pro Tips

Control the eccentric (lowering) phase of the Standing Air Bike for 3-4 seconds to drastically increase time under tension.

Muscle Anatomy

The primary driver is the Quadriceps. However, the movement also recruits Gluteus Maximus, Hamstrings, Calves, Core Stabilizers to maintain control of the Body weight.

Exercise Variations

  • Dumbbell Standing Air Bike
  • Cable Standing Air Bike
  • Banded Standing Air Bike
