Smith Bent Over Row

Instructions

1
Stand inside the Smith machine with feet positioned shoulder-width apart, with the barbell resting across the shoulders behind the neck. Maintain an upright torso with core engaged and neutral spine alignment.
2
Grip the barbell with both hands slightly wider than shoulder-width, palms facing forward. Position feet approximately 12-18 inches in front of the body at a 45-degree angle to allow deeper squat range of motion.
3
Lower the body by simultaneously bending at the knees and hips, descending in a controlled manner until thighs are parallel to or slightly below parallel to the ground. Keep the chest up, knees tracking over toes, and weight distributed through the midfoot and heels.
4
Drive through the midfoot and heels to extend the knees and hips, returning to standing position. Exhale during the upward phase, maintaining full body tension throughout the concentric movement until reaching full knee extension.

Overview

The Smith Bent Over Row is an incredibly effective Strength movement designed to fully engage the Quadriceps. By utilizing Smith machine, this exercise emphasizes a deep stretch and a powerful contraction, making it a cornerstone for anyone looking to optimize their Back development.

Benefits

  • Significantly enhances the structural integrity and power of the Quadriceps.
  • Utilizes Smith machine to create sustained mechanical tension, forcing deep muscle adaptation.
  • Reduces the likelihood of Back injuries by reinforcing connective tissue strength.
  • Acts as a highly scalable Strength movement, perfect for both beginners and elite athletes.

Common Mistakes

  • Failing to achieve a full range of motion, which drastically limits Quadriceps engagement.
  • Losing core tension, leading to poor spinal alignment and reduced power output.
  • Rushing the repetition tempo instead of focusing on the mind-muscle connection with the Back.
  • Shrugging the shoulders or compensating with secondary muscles rather than isolating the Quadriceps.

Muscle Anatomy

The primary driver is the Quadriceps. However, the movement also recruits Gluteus Maximus, Hamstrings, Adductor Magnus, Erector Spinae to maintain control of the Smith machine.

Exercise Variations

  • Dumbbell Smith Bent Over Row
  • Cable Smith Bent Over Row
  • Banded Smith Bent Over Row
