Sitting Incline Press StepOut on a padded stool

Instructions

1
Sit upright on a sturdy box or bench with your torso perpendicular to the ground. Place your feet flat on the floor with knees bent at 90 degrees. Maintain neutral spine alignment with shoulders back.
2
Keep hands positioned near head with palms open and elbows slightly bent. Engage core muscles and ensure full contact between buttocks and the bench surface. Take a deep breath to prepare.
3
Slowly extend both legs forward in a controlled manner by straightening the knees. Drive through the quadriceps while maintaining upright posture. Exhale as legs approach full extension, reaching a 180-degree knee angle.
4
Hold the extended leg position briefly at the top for maximum quadriceps contraction. Return legs to starting position by bending knees in a controlled manner, lowering back to 90-degree knee bend. Inhale during the return phase and repeat for prescribed repetitions.

Overview

If you want to isolate and overload the Quadriceps, the Sitting Incline Press StepOut on a padded stool is an excellent addition to your routine. The mechanics of this Strength exercise specifically bias the Shoulders, while the use of Body weight allows for a smooth, natural resistance curve.

Benefits

  • Utilizes Body weight to create sustained mechanical tension, forcing deep muscle adaptation.
  • Promotes balanced muscular development by effectively recruiting the Quadriceps and associated synergists.
  • Allows for a natural movement path that closely mimics functional daily activities.
  • Acts as a highly scalable Strength movement, perfect for both beginners and elite athletes.

Common Mistakes

  • Failing to achieve a full range of motion, which drastically limits Quadriceps engagement.
  • Rushing the repetition tempo instead of focusing on the mind-muscle connection with the Shoulders.
  • Shrugging the shoulders or compensating with secondary muscles rather than isolating the Quadriceps.
  • Using excessive momentum to swing the Body weight rather than controlling the eccentric phase.

Pro Tips

Keep your breathing rhythmic: exhale sharply on the concentric push/pull, and inhale smoothly on the way down.

Muscle Anatomy

The primary driver is the Quadriceps. However, the movement also recruits Gluteus Maximus, Hamstrings, Rectus Abdominis, Hip Flexors to maintain control of the Body weight.
