Sit-up

Instructions

1
Lie flat on your back on a mat or floor with knees bent and feet flat on the ground. Position feet approximately hip-width apart. Place hands behind your head with fingers interlaced, elbows pointing outward. Keep your neck neutral and avoid pulling on the head.
2
Engage your core and prepare to lift by taking a deep breath. Exhale as you initiate the movement. Keep tension throughout the abdominal region and maintain a neutral spine without flattening the lower back.
3
Lower your upper back and shoulders slowly back to the starting position while keeping core engaged throughout. Control the descent to maximize time under tension. Maintain contact with the mat and do not relax completely between repetitions.
4
Exhale as you curl your upper torso forward, lifting your shoulders and upper back off the mat. Drive the movement through abdominal contraction by bringing your ribs toward your pelvis. Continue until you achieve maximum abdominal flexion, then hold briefly at the top before reversing the motion.

Overview

If you want to isolate and overload the Rectus Abdominis, the Sit-up is an excellent addition to your routine. The mechanics of this Strength exercise specifically bias the Waist, while the use of Body weight allows for a smooth, natural resistance curve.

Benefits

  • Promotes balanced muscular development by effectively recruiting the Rectus Abdominis and associated synergists.
  • Utilizes Body weight to create sustained mechanical tension, forcing deep muscle adaptation.
  • Allows for a natural movement path that closely mimics functional daily activities.
  • Improves overall Waist stability and proprioception during heavy loads.
  • Reduces the likelihood of Waist injuries by reinforcing connective tissue strength.

Common Mistakes

  • Losing core tension, leading to poor spinal alignment and reduced power output.
  • Shrugging the shoulders or compensating with secondary muscles rather than isolating the Rectus Abdominis.
  • Failing to achieve a full range of motion, which drastically limits Rectus Abdominis engagement.

Pro Tips

To maximize the Sit-up , actively squeeze the Rectus Abdominis at the peak of the contraction for a full second.

Muscle Anatomy

The primary driver is the Rectus Abdominis. However, the movement also recruits Obliquus Externus Abdominis, Obliquus Internus Abdominis, Transversus Abdominis, Iliopsoas to maintain control of the Body weight.

Exercise Variations

  • Dumbbell Sit-up
  • Cable Sit-up
  • Banded Sit-up

Beginner Tips

If you are new to the Sit-up , focus on mastering the movement pattern with zero weight before adding Body weight.
