Shoulder Grip Pull-up

Instructions

1
Stand beneath a pull-up bar with feet hip-width apart. Grip the bar with hands slightly wider than shoulder-width, using an overhand or mixed grip. Allow arms to hang fully extended with a slight bend in the knees.
2
Engage core and maintain neutral spine alignment. Depress shoulders away from ears and prepare to initiate the pull by retracting scapulae.
3
Lower the body in a controlled manner by extending the arms and allowing the lats to lengthen. Maintain slight tension throughout the eccentric phase. Body descends with resistance until arms are nearly fully extended but not locked.
4
Pull the body upward by driving elbows down and back, retracting the scapulae. Lead with chest toward the bar while maintaining engaged core. Continue until chin clears the bar or chest approaches bar level. Pause briefly at top, then control descent back to starting position.

Overview

Athletic trainers and bodybuilding coaches frequently recommend the Shoulder Grip Pull-up because it challenges the Latissimus Dorsi through a dynamic range of motion. By relying on Body weight, it reinforces proper movement patterns and builds robust strength in the Back region.

Benefits

  • Allows for a natural movement path that closely mimics functional daily activities.
  • Reduces the likelihood of Back injuries by reinforcing connective tissue strength.
  • Improves overall Back stability and proprioception during heavy loads.
  • Promotes balanced muscular development by effectively recruiting the Latissimus Dorsi and associated synergists.

Common Mistakes

  • Losing core tension, leading to poor spinal alignment and reduced power output.
  • Shrugging the shoulders or compensating with secondary muscles rather than isolating the Latissimus Dorsi.
  • Using excessive momentum to swing the Body weight rather than controlling the eccentric phase.
  • Rushing the repetition tempo instead of focusing on the mind-muscle connection with the Back.

Pro Tips

To maximize the Shoulder Grip Pull-up , actively squeeze the Latissimus Dorsi at the peak of the contraction for a full second.

Muscle Anatomy

The primary driver is the Latissimus Dorsi. However, the movement also recruits Trapezius, Rhomboids, Biceps, Posterior Deltoids to maintain control of the Body weight.

Exercise Variations
