Lying Crunch straight legs

Instructions

1
Lie supine on your back with knees bent and feet flat on the floor, positioned hip-width apart. Place hands behind your head with elbows pointing outward, or crossed over your chest. Keep your lower back neutral against the floor.
2
Engage your core by drawing your navel toward your spine. Position your neck in neutral alignment with your spine, avoiding neck flexion. Prepare to lift by tensioning the abdominal muscles without pulling on the head.
3
Lower your torso back toward the floor in a controlled manner, extending the spine slightly and allowing the abdominals to lengthen. Maintain constant tension throughout the eccentric phase without releasing completely to the floor.
4
Perform a strong abdominal contraction, lifting your shoulders and upper back off the floor by flexing at the spine. Curl your torso upward until the rectus abdominis reaches peak contraction, then return to the starting position with controlled movement.

Overview

If you want to isolate and overload the Rectus Abdominis, the Lying Crunch straight legs is an excellent addition to your routine. The mechanics of this Strength exercise specifically bias the Waist, while the use of Body weight allows for a smooth, natural resistance curve.

Benefits

  • Reduces the likelihood of Waist injuries by reinforcing connective tissue strength.
  • Acts as a highly scalable Strength movement, perfect for both beginners and elite athletes.
  • Improves overall Waist stability and proprioception during heavy loads.
  • Allows for a natural movement path that closely mimics functional daily activities.
  • Significantly enhances the structural integrity and power of the Rectus Abdominis.

Common Mistakes

  • Shrugging the shoulders or compensating with secondary muscles rather than isolating the Rectus Abdominis.
  • Failing to achieve a full range of motion, which drastically limits Rectus Abdominis engagement.
  • Rushing the repetition tempo instead of focusing on the mind-muscle connection with the Waist.

Pro Tips

Control the eccentric (lowering) phase of the Lying Crunch straight legs for 3-4 seconds to drastically increase time under tension.

Muscle Anatomy

The primary driver is the Rectus Abdominis. However, the movement also recruits Iliopsoas, Rectus Femoris, Sartorius, Transverse Abdominis to maintain control of the Body weight.
