Lunge

Instructions

1
Stand upright with feet hip-width apart, arms positioned at chest level with hands clasped or in a defensive position near the torso, maintain neutral spine alignment
2
Engage core muscles and prepare for explosive movement by establishing a stable stance with weight distributed evenly through both feet
3
Lower body by bending at the knees and hips in a controlled manner, descending into a lunge position with one leg stepping forward while the back knee approaches the ground
4
Drive through the front heel to extend the knee and hip, explosively pushing off the ground to return to standing position and bring the back leg forward, alternating legs in a continuous running or lunging motion

Overview

If you want to isolate and overload the Quadriceps, the Lunge is an excellent addition to your routine. The mechanics of this Strength, Cardio exercise specifically bias the Hips, Thighs, while the use of Body weight allows for a smooth, natural resistance curve.

Benefits

  • Improves overall Hips, Thighs stability and proprioception during heavy loads.
  • Reduces the likelihood of Hips, Thighs injuries by reinforcing connective tissue strength.
  • Promotes balanced muscular development by effectively recruiting the Quadriceps and associated synergists.

Common Mistakes

  • Shrugging the shoulders or compensating with secondary muscles rather than isolating the Quadriceps.
  • Using excessive momentum to swing the Body weight rather than controlling the eccentric phase.
  • Failing to achieve a full range of motion, which drastically limits Quadriceps engagement.

Pro Tips

Think about pulling from your elbows rather than your hands to better isolate the Quadriceps and minimize bicep/forearm takeover.

Muscle Anatomy

The primary driver is the Quadriceps. However, the movement also recruits Gluteus Maximus, Hamstrings, Gastrocnemius, Adductor Magnus to maintain control of the Body weight.

Beginner Tips

If you are new to the Lunge , focus on mastering the movement pattern with zero weight before adding Body weight.
