Lever Unilateral Row

Instructions

1
Stand facing the cable machine with feet shoulder-width apart, knees slightly bent. Grasp the rope or handle attachment with both hands at chest height, arms extended forward. Maintain an upright posture with core engaged.
2
Grip the attachment firmly with both hands using a neutral or slightly pronated grip. Position yourself at a distance where the cable has tension at the starting position. Establish a stable stance with weight distributed evenly through your feet.
3
Initiate the movement by bending forward at the hips while maintaining a slight knee bend. Pull the cable attachment downward and toward your torso by retracting your shoulder blades and driving your elbows down and back. Control the eccentric phase as the cable resists your pull, focusing on the stretch in the latissimus dorsi.
4
Complete the concentric phase by powerfully pulling the cable down to your lower torso while keeping elbows tucked close to your body. Squeeze the latissimus dorsi at the bottom of the movement. Reverse the motion in a controlled manner to return to the starting position with arms extended forward, resisting the cable tension throughout.

Overview

If you want to isolate and overload the Latissimus Dorsi, the Lever Unilateral Row is an excellent addition to your routine. The mechanics of this Strength exercise specifically bias the Back, while the use of Leverage machine allows for a smooth, natural resistance curve.

Benefits

  • Improves overall Back stability and proprioception during heavy loads.
  • Promotes balanced muscular development by effectively recruiting the Latissimus Dorsi and associated synergists.
  • Allows for a natural movement path that closely mimics functional daily activities.

Common Mistakes

  • Using excessive momentum to swing the Leverage machine rather than controlling the eccentric phase.
  • Rushing the repetition tempo instead of focusing on the mind-muscle connection with the Back.
  • Shrugging the shoulders or compensating with secondary muscles rather than isolating the Latissimus Dorsi.

Pro Tips

Control the eccentric (lowering) phase of the Lever Unilateral Row for 3-4 seconds to drastically increase time under tension.

Muscle Anatomy

The primary driver is the Latissimus Dorsi. However, the movement also recruits Pectoralis Major, Teres Major, Biceps Brachii, Rhomboids to maintain control of the Leverage machine.

Exercise Variations

  • Dumbbell Lever Unilateral Row
  • Cable Lever Unilateral Row
  • Banded Lever Unilateral Row

Beginner Tips

If you are new to the Lever Unilateral Row, focus on mastering the movement pattern with zero weight before adding Leverage machine.
