Inchworm

Instructions

1
Stand upright with feet hip-width apart, knees slightly bent, arms at sides with neutral spine alignment
2
Engage core and maintain neutral head position looking forward; prepare to hinge at hips with slight knee flexion throughout the movement
3
Slowly bend forward at the hips, allowing torso to fold toward legs while keeping knees slightly bent and back relatively straight, lowering until hamstrings reach maximum stretch or torso approaches horizontal
4
Drive through heels and contract hamstrings to return to standing position by extending hips, maintaining neutral spine throughout the upward movement until reaching full upright posture

Overview

The Inchworm is an incredibly effective Cardio movement designed to fully engage the Hamstrings. By utilizing Body weight, this exercise emphasizes a deep stretch and a powerful contraction, making it a cornerstone for anyone looking to optimize their Waist development.

Benefits

  • Allows for a natural movement path that closely mimics functional daily activities.
  • Utilizes Body weight to create sustained mechanical tension, forcing deep muscle adaptation.
  • Acts as a highly scalable Cardio movement, perfect for both beginners and elite athletes.
  • Promotes balanced muscular development by effectively recruiting the Hamstrings and associated synergists.
  • Improves overall Waist stability and proprioception during heavy loads.

Common Mistakes

  • Shrugging the shoulders or compensating with secondary muscles rather than isolating the Hamstrings.
  • Using excessive momentum to swing the Body weight rather than controlling the eccentric phase.
  • Losing core tension, leading to poor spinal alignment and reduced power output.
  • Rushing the repetition tempo instead of focusing on the mind-muscle connection with the Waist.

Pro Tips

Control the eccentric (lowering) phase of the Inchworm for 3-4 seconds to drastically increase time under tension.

Exercise Variations

  • Dumbbell Inchworm
  • Cable Inchworm
  • Banded Inchworm

Beginner Tips

If you are new to the Inchworm , focus on mastering the movement pattern with zero weight before adding Body weight.
