Hip Extension Stretch

Instructions

1
Start in a plank position with hands shoulder-width apart, arms extended, body in a straight line from head to heels, core engaged, and feet together or hip-width apart.
2
Prepare by ensuring a tight plank with neutral spine, shoulders packed, and engaged core. Position legs straight and ready for movement.
3
Lower one leg by bending at the knee, bringing the heel toward the glutes while maintaining a level plank position. The opposite leg remains extended and straight.
4
Extend the bent leg back to the starting position with a controlled movement, fully straightening the knee. Alternate legs in a controlled alternating pattern.

Overview

Focusing on the Hip Extension Stretch allows you to target the Quadriceps with precision. As a foundational Stretching, Cardio exercise, the integration of Body weight provides the necessary tension to trigger hypertrophy, while avoiding excessive joint strain.

Benefits

  • Improves overall Hips stability and proprioception during heavy loads.
  • Promotes balanced muscular development by effectively recruiting the Quadriceps and associated synergists.
  • Reduces the likelihood of Hips injuries by reinforcing connective tissue strength.

Common Mistakes

  • Failing to achieve a full range of motion, which drastically limits Quadriceps engagement.
  • Shrugging the shoulders or compensating with secondary muscles rather than isolating the Quadriceps.
  • Losing core tension, leading to poor spinal alignment and reduced power output.
  • Rushing the repetition tempo instead of focusing on the mind-muscle connection with the Hips.

Muscle Anatomy

The primary driver is the Quadriceps. However, the movement also recruits Gluteus Maximus, Hamstrings, Rectus Abdominis, Hip Flexors to maintain control of the Body weight.

Exercise Variations

  • Dumbbell Hip Extension Stretch
