Front Plank

Instructions

1
Start in a high plank position with hands shoulder-width apart, shoulders directly over wrists, body forming a straight line from head to heels, core engaged and tight.
2
Engage your core by bracing abdominal muscles. Position knees under hips, ready to drive forward with controlled movement.
3
From the plank position, lower your body by bringing knees toward chest in a controlled eccentric phase, maintaining a straight line through the torso and avoiding hip drop or sagging.
4
Explosively drive knees forward toward the chest, contracting abdominal muscles maximally. Return to plank position by extending legs back to starting position with control. Repeat for target repetitions.

Overview

Focusing on the Front Plank allows you to target the Rectus Abdominis with precision. As a foundational Strength, Stretching exercise, the integration of Body weight provides the necessary tension to trigger hypertrophy, while avoiding excessive joint strain.

Benefits

  • Reduces the likelihood of Waist injuries by reinforcing connective tissue strength.
  • Acts as a highly scalable Strength, Stretching movement, perfect for both beginners and elite athletes.
  • Utilizes Body weight to create sustained mechanical tension, forcing deep muscle adaptation.
  • Improves overall Waist stability and proprioception during heavy loads.
  • Significantly enhances the structural integrity and power of the Rectus Abdominis.

Common Mistakes

  • Failing to achieve a full range of motion, which drastically limits Rectus Abdominis engagement.
  • Rushing the repetition tempo instead of focusing on the mind-muscle connection with the Waist.
  • Using excessive momentum to swing the Body weight rather than controlling the eccentric phase.

Pro Tips

Control the eccentric (lowering) phase of the Front Plank for 3-4 seconds to drastically increase time under tension.

Exercise Variations

  • Dumbbell Front Plank
  • Cable Front Plank
  • Banded Front Plank

Beginner Tips

If you are new to the Front Plank , focus on mastering the movement pattern with zero weight before adding Body weight.
