Dumbbell Seated Alternate Shoulder Press

Instructions

1
Sit upright on a bench with back support, feet flat on the floor or bench footrest. Keep torso stable against the backrest with neutral spine alignment.
2
Hold one dumbbell in each hand at shoulder height with elbows bent at approximately 90 degrees. Palms face forward (neutral grip). Ensure shoulders are relaxed and scapulae are retracted.
3
Lower the dumbbells in a controlled manner by bending the elbows, bringing the weights down toward shoulder level. Maintain constant tension and avoid dropping the weight quickly. Stop when upper arms are approximately parallel to the ground.
4
Press the dumbbells upward by extending the elbows and driving through the shoulders until arms are nearly fully extended overhead. Avoid locking elbows at the top. Return to shoulder height and repeat for prescribed repetitions.

Overview

Focusing on the Dumbbell Seated Alternate Shoulder Press allows you to target the Deltoids with precision. As a foundational Strength exercise, the integration of Dumbbell provides the necessary tension to trigger hypertrophy, while avoiding excessive joint strain.

Benefits

  • Reduces the likelihood of Shoulders injuries by reinforcing connective tissue strength.
  • Utilizes Dumbbell to create sustained mechanical tension, forcing deep muscle adaptation.
  • Promotes balanced muscular development by effectively recruiting the Deltoids and associated synergists.
  • Improves overall Shoulders stability and proprioception during heavy loads.

Pro Tips

Think about pulling from your elbows rather than your hands to better isolate the Deltoids and minimize bicep/forearm takeover.

Muscle Anatomy
