Dumbbell Renegade Row

Instructions

1
Start in a plank position with feet together or slightly apart, hands holding dumbbells positioned under shoulders, body forming a straight line from head to heels, core engaged
2
Grip dumbbells firmly with neutral wrist position, shoulders packed slightly back, ensure full body tension with glutes and core braced throughout the entire movement
3
Lower body in controlled manner by bending elbows, allowing dumbbells to track alongside torso at roughly 45-degree angle from body, descend until chest nearly touches dumbbells or slight tension is felt in pectorals, maintain neutral spine throughout
4
Press through palms to explosively drive body upward, extending elbows while maintaining slight elbow bend at top, return to starting plank position with dumbbells under shoulders, avoid locking elbows at top

Overview

If you want to isolate and overload the Pectoralis Major, the Dumbbell Renegade Row is an excellent addition to your routine. The mechanics of this Strength, Cardio exercise specifically bias the Back, while the use of Dumbbell allows for a smooth, natural resistance curve.

Benefits

  • Promotes balanced muscular development by effectively recruiting the Pectoralis Major and associated synergists.
  • Significantly enhances the structural integrity and power of the Pectoralis Major.
  • Reduces the likelihood of Back injuries by reinforcing connective tissue strength.
  • Allows for a natural movement path that closely mimics functional daily activities.

Common Mistakes

  • Rushing the repetition tempo instead of focusing on the mind-muscle connection with the Back.
  • Shrugging the shoulders or compensating with secondary muscles rather than isolating the Pectoralis Major.
  • Failing to achieve a full range of motion, which drastically limits Pectoralis Major engagement.
  • Losing core tension, leading to poor spinal alignment and reduced power output.

Muscle Anatomy

The primary driver is the Pectoralis Major. However, the movement also recruits Anterior Deltoid, Triceps, Pectoralis Minor, Serratus Anterior to maintain control of the Dumbbell.

Beginner Tips

If you are new to the Dumbbell Renegade Row, focus on mastering the movement pattern with zero weight before adding Dumbbell.
