Dumbbell Alternate Shoulder Press

Instructions

1
Stand with feet shoulder-width apart, knees slightly bent, core engaged. Hold a dumbbell in each hand with a neutral grip at shoulder height, elbows bent at approximately 90 degrees.
2
Position dumbbells at shoulder level with elbows pointing downward and slightly forward. Ensure shoulders are relaxed and retracted. Maintain neutral spine alignment throughout the movement.
3
Slowly lower both dumbbells in a controlled manner by bending the elbows, bringing them down toward shoulder level. Keep the elbows at approximately 90 degrees and resist the downward pull. This eccentric phase should take 2-3 seconds.
4
Press dumbbells upward and slightly inward by extending the elbows and driving through the shoulders. Continue until arms are nearly fully extended overhead without locking elbows. Return to starting shoulder-height position in a controlled manner. Exhale during the pressing phase.

Overview

Athletic trainers and bodybuilding coaches frequently recommend the Dumbbell Alternate Shoulder Press because it challenges the Deltoids through a dynamic range of motion. By relying on Dumbbell, it reinforces proper movement patterns and builds robust strength in the Shoulders region.

Benefits

  • Promotes balanced muscular development by effectively recruiting the Deltoids and associated synergists.
  • Acts as a highly scalable Strength movement, perfect for both beginners and elite athletes.
  • Allows for a natural movement path that closely mimics functional daily activities.
  • Utilizes Dumbbell to create sustained mechanical tension, forcing deep muscle adaptation.

Pro Tips

Think about pulling from your elbows rather than your hands to better isolate the Deltoids and minimize bicep/forearm takeover.

Muscle Anatomy

The primary driver is the Deltoids. However, the movement also recruits Trapezius, Triceps, Rotator Cuff to maintain control of the Dumbbell.

Beginner Tips

If you are new to the Dumbbell Alternate Shoulder Press , focus on mastering the movement pattern with zero weight before adding Dumbbell.
