Donkey Calf Raise

Instructions

1
Sit on a flat bench with feet positioned on a step platform. Place hands on the bench behind you for light support. Keep torso upright and legs extended with knees slightly bent.
2
Position balls of feet on the edge of the step platform with heels hanging off. Ensure toes point forward and core is engaged. Hands rest on bench for balance only.
3
Lower heels below the step platform by dorsiflexing the ankles, feeling a stretch through the calf muscles. Move in a controlled manner, allowing full range of motion through the ankle joint.
4
Push through the balls of feet to plantarflex the ankles, raising heels above step level. Squeeze calf muscles at the top of the movement before returning to the starting position.

Overview

The Donkey Calf Raise is an incredibly effective Strength movement designed to fully engage the Gastrocnemius. By utilizing Body weight, this exercise emphasizes a deep stretch and a powerful contraction, making it a cornerstone for anyone looking to optimize their Calves development.

Benefits

  • Significantly enhances the structural integrity and power of the Gastrocnemius.
  • Allows for a natural movement path that closely mimics functional daily activities.
  • Utilizes Body weight to create sustained mechanical tension, forcing deep muscle adaptation.
  • Acts as a highly scalable Strength movement, perfect for both beginners and elite athletes.

Common Mistakes

  • Losing core tension, leading to poor spinal alignment and reduced power output.
  • Using excessive momentum to swing the Body weight rather than controlling the eccentric phase.
  • Failing to achieve a full range of motion, which drastically limits Gastrocnemius engagement.
  • Rushing the repetition tempo instead of focusing on the mind-muscle connection with the Calves.

Pro Tips

Think about pulling from your elbows rather than your hands to better isolate the Gastrocnemius and minimize bicep/forearm takeover.

Exercise Variations

  • Dumbbell Donkey Calf Raise
  • Cable Donkey Calf Raise
  • Banded Donkey Calf Raise
