Cable Shrug

Instructions

1
Stand facing a cable machine with feet shoulder-width apart, maintaining neutral spine alignment. Position yourself at a distance where cables are taut but not under tension at rest.
2
Grasp both cable handles with a neutral grip (palms facing inward). Arms should be extended forward at shoulder height with slight elbow bend. Engage core and maintain upright posture.
3
Slowly allow the cable handles to pull your arms forward, letting your shoulders protract and your scapulae retract toward the rib cage. Control the movement over 2-3 seconds, feeling a stretch across the upper back and shoulders.
4
Contract the trapezius and rhomboids by pulling both handles toward your torso in a controlled manner. Retract and elevate the scapulae, bringing elbows back past the frontal plane. Squeeze for 1 second at full contraction, then return to starting position with control.

Overview

If you want to isolate and overload the Trapezius, the Cable Shrug is an excellent addition to your routine. The mechanics of this Strength exercise specifically bias the Back, while the use of Cable allows for a smooth, natural resistance curve.

Benefits

  • Allows for a natural movement path that closely mimics functional daily activities.
  • Promotes balanced muscular development by effectively recruiting the Trapezius and associated synergists.
  • Acts as a highly scalable Strength movement, perfect for both beginners and elite athletes.
  • Utilizes Cable to create sustained mechanical tension, forcing deep muscle adaptation.

Pro Tips

If you feel this primarily in your joints rather than the Trapezius, instantly lower the weight and readjust your Cable setup.

Muscle Anatomy

The primary driver is the Trapezius. However, the movement also recruits Rhomboid Major, Rhomboid Minor, Latissimus Dorsi, Posterior Deltoid to maintain control of the Cable.

Exercise Variations

  • Dumbbell Cable Shrug
  • Cable Cable Shrug
  • Banded Cable Shrug

Beginner Tips
