Cable Rear Pulldown

Instructions

1
Sit upright on the machine bench with feet flat on the floor or footrest. Position your body centered under the overhead pulley system with neutral spine alignment. Grasp the lat pulldown bar with a pronated grip (palms facing forward), hands positioned slightly wider than shoulder-width apart.
2
Adjust the knee pad to secure your lower body in place. Establish a firm grip on the bar with arms extended overhead. Depress your scapula slightly and maintain a neutral head position looking forward.
3
In a controlled manner, allow the bar to rise back to the starting position with arms extending overhead. The weight stack returns to its resting position as the lats lengthen and the shoulder blades retract upward. Maintain core tension throughout the descent phase.
4
Drive the elbows down and back in a smooth arc, pulling the bar toward your upper chest. Think about initiating the movement by driving elbows down rather than pulling with hands. Fully depress and retract the scapulae at the bottom position. Squeeze the lats for 1-2 seconds before beginning the eccentric phase.

Overview

Focusing on the Cable Rear Pulldown allows you to target the Latissimus Dorsi with precision. As a foundational Strength exercise, the integration of Cable provides the necessary tension to trigger hypertrophy, while avoiding excessive joint strain.

Benefits

  • Allows for a natural movement path that closely mimics functional daily activities.
  • Significantly enhances the structural integrity and power of the Latissimus Dorsi.
  • Improves overall Back stability and proprioception during heavy loads.

Common Mistakes

  • Losing core tension, leading to poor spinal alignment and reduced power output.
  • Shrugging the shoulders or compensating with secondary muscles rather than isolating the Latissimus Dorsi.
  • Failing to achieve a full range of motion, which drastically limits Latissimus Dorsi engagement.

Pro Tips

If you feel this primarily in your joints rather than the Latissimus Dorsi, instantly lower the weight and readjust your Cable setup.

Muscle Anatomy

The primary driver is the Latissimus Dorsi. However, the movement also recruits Trapezius, Rhomboids, Biceps Brachii, Posterior Deltoid to maintain control of the Cable.

Exercise Variations

  • Dumbbell Cable Rear Pulldown
  • Cable Cable Rear Pulldown
  • Banded Cable Rear Pulldown

Beginner Tips

If you are new to the Cable Rear Pulldown, focus on mastering the movement pattern with zero weight before adding Cable.
