Cable Lateral Raise

Instructions

1
Stand upright between two cable pulleys set at shoulder height. Position feet shoulder-width apart with neutral spine. Grasp each handle with a neutral grip (palms facing each other), arms relaxed at sides.
2
Engage core and maintain neutral posture. Ensure cables have appropriate tension. Slight forward chest lean is acceptable. Establish stable footing before initiating movement.
3
Slowly allow arms to abduct (move away from body) in a controlled manner, letting the weight pull arms outward and slightly behind the coronal plane. Maintain slight elbow bend throughout. Lower until arms reach shoulder height or slight mechanical disadvantage.
4
Press through shoulders and initiate adduction by contracting deltoids. Drive arms back toward center in a controlled arc, bringing handles together in front of body. Squeeze shoulder muscles at end range. Return to start position with control and repeat.

Overview

Athletic trainers and bodybuilding coaches frequently recommend the Cable Lateral Raise because it challenges the Deltoids through a dynamic range of motion. By relying on Cable, it reinforces proper movement patterns and builds robust strength in the Shoulders region.

Benefits

  • Allows for a natural movement path that closely mimics functional daily activities.
  • Improves overall Shoulders stability and proprioception during heavy loads.
  • Reduces the likelihood of Shoulders injuries by reinforcing connective tissue strength.

Common Mistakes

  • Shrugging the shoulders or compensating with secondary muscles rather than isolating the Deltoids.
  • Rushing the repetition tempo instead of focusing on the mind-muscle connection with the Shoulders.
  • Using excessive momentum to swing the Cable rather than controlling the eccentric phase.

Pro Tips

Control the eccentric (lowering) phase of the Cable Lateral Raise for 3-4 seconds to drastically increase time under tension.

Muscle Anatomy

The primary driver is the Deltoids. However, the movement also recruits Trapezius, Pectoralis Major, Triceps, Latissimus Dorsi to maintain control of the Cable.

Exercise Variations

  • Dumbbell Cable Lateral Raise
  • Cable Cable Lateral Raise
  • Banded Cable Lateral Raise

Beginner Tips

If you are new to the Cable Lateral Raise , focus on mastering the movement pattern with zero weight before adding Cable.
