Bodyweight Skipping

Instructions

1
Stand upright with feet hip-width apart, arms at sides or extended for balance, core engaged, and neutral spine alignment
2
Engage core muscles and prepare for explosive movement by taking a slight bend in knees to generate power
3
Lower body by bending knees and hips, dropping torso toward thighs while maintaining neutral spine and arms overhead or extended for counterbalance during descent
4
Explosively drive through heels to extend knees and hips, propelling body upward off ground in a jumping motion, landing softly with knees slightly bent to absorb impact and return to standing position

Overview

The Bodyweight Skipping is an incredibly effective Cardio movement designed to fully engage the Quadriceps. By utilizing Body weight, this exercise emphasizes a deep stretch and a powerful contraction, making it a cornerstone for anyone looking to optimize their Plyometrics development.

Benefits

  • Improves overall Plyometrics stability and proprioception during heavy loads.
  • Reduces the likelihood of Plyometrics injuries by reinforcing connective tissue strength.
  • Utilizes Body weight to create sustained mechanical tension, forcing deep muscle adaptation.

Common Mistakes

  • Using excessive momentum to swing the Body weight rather than controlling the eccentric phase.
  • Losing core tension, leading to poor spinal alignment and reduced power output.
  • Failing to achieve a full range of motion, which drastically limits Quadriceps engagement.

Pro Tips

Control the eccentric (lowering) phase of the Bodyweight Skipping for 3-4 seconds to drastically increase time under tension.

Muscle Anatomy

The primary driver is the Quadriceps. However, the movement also recruits Gluteus Maximus, Hamstrings, Gastrocnemius, Hip Flexors to maintain control of the Body weight.

Exercise Variations

  • Dumbbell Bodyweight Skipping
  • Cable Bodyweight Skipping
  • Banded Bodyweight Skipping

Beginner Tips

If you are new to the Bodyweight Skipping , focus on mastering the movement pattern with zero weight before adding Body weight.
