Barbell Split Squat

Instructions

1
Stand upright with feet shoulder-width apart, holding a barbell across the upper back with hands slightly wider than shoulders. Keep your chest up, core engaged, and gaze forward.
2
Position the barbell securely on the upper trapezius and rear shoulders. Distribute weight evenly across both feet, with toes pointing slightly outward. Engage your core and maintain a neutral spine.
3
Lower your body by simultaneously bending at the hips and knees, keeping your chest elevated and weight centered over your midfoot. Descend until your thighs reach approximately parallel to the ground, or deeper if mobility allows, while maintaining upright torso position.
4
Drive through your midfoot and heel to extend your hips and knees simultaneously, returning to the starting standing position. Maintain neutral spine and controlled movement throughout the upward phase.

Overview

Athletic trainers and bodybuilding coaches frequently recommend the Barbell Split Squat because it challenges the Quadriceps through a dynamic range of motion. By relying on Barbell, it reinforces proper movement patterns and builds robust strength in the Hips region.

Benefits

  • Improves overall Hips stability and proprioception during heavy loads.
  • Significantly enhances the structural integrity and power of the Quadriceps.
  • Promotes balanced muscular development by effectively recruiting the Quadriceps and associated synergists.
  • Acts as a highly scalable Strength movement, perfect for both beginners and elite athletes.

Pro Tips

Think about pulling from your elbows rather than your hands to better isolate the Quadriceps and minimize bicep/forearm takeover.

Muscle Anatomy

The primary driver is the Quadriceps. However, the movement also recruits Gluteus Maximus, Hamstrings, Erector Spinae, Adductors to maintain control of the Barbell.

Beginner Tips

If you are new to the Barbell Split Squat , focus on mastering the movement pattern with zero weight before adding Barbell.
