Barbell Shrug

Instructions

1
Stand upright with feet shoulder-width apart, holding a barbell with both hands using an underhand (supinated) grip slightly wider than shoulder-width. Let the bar hang at arm's length with elbows close to your torso and palms facing forward.
2
Keep your chest up, shoulders back, and core engaged. Ensure your elbows remain stationary and tucked close to your sides throughout the movement. This is the starting position.
3
Lower the barbell in a controlled manner by extending your elbows, allowing your forearms to straighten while keeping your upper arms stationary. Continue lowering until your arms are nearly fully extended at the bottom position.
4
Reverse the motion by contracting your biceps and flexing your elbows to pull the barbell upward. Drive through your heels and maintain elbow position close to your torso. Return to the starting position with the bar at shoulder height, squeezing your biceps at the top before repeating.

Overview

If you want to isolate and overload the Biceps Brachii, the Barbell Shrug is an excellent addition to your routine. The mechanics of this Strength exercise specifically bias the Back, while the use of Barbell allows for a smooth, natural resistance curve.

Benefits

  • Acts as a highly scalable Strength movement, perfect for both beginners and elite athletes.
  • Significantly enhances the structural integrity and power of the Biceps Brachii.
  • Utilizes Barbell to create sustained mechanical tension, forcing deep muscle adaptation.
  • Improves overall Back stability and proprioception during heavy loads.
  • Reduces the likelihood of Back injuries by reinforcing connective tissue strength.

Common Mistakes

  • Shrugging the shoulders or compensating with secondary muscles rather than isolating the Biceps Brachii.
  • Rushing the repetition tempo instead of focusing on the mind-muscle connection with the Back.
  • Failing to achieve a full range of motion, which drastically limits Biceps Brachii engagement.

Pro Tips

Control the eccentric (lowering) phase of the Barbell Shrug for 3-4 seconds to drastically increase time under tension.

Muscle Anatomy

The primary driver is the Biceps Brachii. However, the movement also recruits Brachialis, Brachioradialis, Anterior Deltoid to maintain control of the Barbell.

Exercise Variations

  • Dumbbell Barbell Shrug
  • Cable Barbell Shrug
  • Banded Barbell Shrug

Beginner Tips

If you are new to the Barbell Shrug , focus on mastering the movement pattern with zero weight before adding Barbell.
