Barbell One Arm Side Deadlift

Instructions

1
Stand with feet shoulder-width apart, holding a barbell across your upper back with hands slightly wider than shoulder-width. Keep your chest up, shoulders back, and core engaged. Position the bar securely on the trapezius muscles.
2
Take a deep breath and brace your core. Maintain a neutral spine with a slight forward lean. Your weight should be distributed evenly across your midfoot. Keep your head in a neutral position looking straight ahead.
3
Lower your body by simultaneously bending at the hips and knees, descending in a controlled manner. Push your hips back while lowering your torso forward slightly. Descend until your thighs are parallel to the floor or below, maintaining knee alignment over your toes. Keep your chest up and core tight throughout the descent.
4
Drive through your midfoot and extend your hips and knees simultaneously to return to standing position. Push the floor away powerfully, extending your legs fully at the top. Exhale as you drive upward, returning to the starting position with control.

Overview

Focusing on the Barbell One Arm Side Deadlift allows you to target the Quadriceps with precision. As a foundational Strength exercise, the integration of Barbell provides the necessary tension to trigger hypertrophy, while avoiding excessive joint strain.

Benefits

  • Acts as a highly scalable Strength movement, perfect for both beginners and elite athletes.
  • Allows for a natural movement path that closely mimics functional daily activities.
  • Promotes balanced muscular development by effectively recruiting the Quadriceps and associated synergists.

Common Mistakes

  • Failing to achieve a full range of motion, which drastically limits Quadriceps engagement.
  • Losing core tension, leading to poor spinal alignment and reduced power output.
  • Using excessive momentum to swing the Barbell rather than controlling the eccentric phase.
  • Shrugging the shoulders or compensating with secondary muscles rather than isolating the Quadriceps.

Pro Tips

Keep your breathing rhythmic: exhale sharply on the concentric push/pull, and inhale smoothly on the way down.

Muscle Anatomy

The primary driver is the Quadriceps. However, the movement also recruits Gluteus Maximus, Hamstrings, Erector Spinae, Adductors to maintain control of the Barbell.
