1
Lie flat on a bench with back and head firmly supported, feet flat on floor or bench. Position body perpendicular to bench with hips at bench level. Grip barbell with hands slightly wider than shoulder-width, arms fully extended above chest.
2
Unrack the barbell or press from the starting position. Establish a firm grip with palms facing forward. Engage core and press shoulder blades slightly into the bench. Maintain neutral wrist position throughout the movement.
3
Lower the barbell in a controlled manner by bending elbows, moving the bar downward and slightly toward the lower chest in an arc. Lower until elbows are approximately 90 degrees or slightly below parallel to the bench. Maintain control and do not bounce the weight off the chest.
4
Press the barbell upward by extending elbows and contracting chest muscles, driving through the palms. Return to starting position with arms nearly fully extended (slight elbow bend at top). Exhale during the concentric phase and maintain tension throughout.
