Band standing rear delt row

Instructions

1
Stand facing a cable machine with feet shoulder-width apart, knees slightly bent. Position yourself at an appropriate distance from the machine so the cable is at or slightly above head height. Maintain neutral spine with chest up and shoulders back.
2
Grip the handle or rope attachment with both hands using an overhand or neutral grip. Ensure core is engaged and shoulders are in a stable position. Arms should be extended upward with slight elbow bend, maintaining tension in the cable.
3
Slowly extend your arms upward and slightly forward in a controlled manner, allowing the cable to pull your arms toward full extension. Maintain slight elbow flexion throughout to prevent hyperextension. Feel the stretch in the latissimus dorsi as the resistance increases.
4
Pull the handle downward and toward your torso by driving elbows down and back, retracting scapulae. Squeeze latissimus dorsi at the bottom position where hands approach upper chest/shoulder area. Return to starting position with controlled movement, resisting the cable's pull back to extension.

Overview

If you want to isolate and overload the Latissimus Dorsi, the Band standing rear delt row is an excellent addition to your routine. The mechanics of this Strength exercise specifically bias the Shoulders, while the use of Band allows for a smooth, natural resistance curve.

Benefits

  • Improves overall Shoulders stability and proprioception during heavy loads.
  • Acts as a highly scalable Strength movement, perfect for both beginners and elite athletes.
  • Utilizes Band to create sustained mechanical tension, forcing deep muscle adaptation.

Common Mistakes

  • Losing core tension, leading to poor spinal alignment and reduced power output.
  • Shrugging the shoulders or compensating with secondary muscles rather than isolating the Latissimus Dorsi.
  • Rushing the repetition tempo instead of focusing on the mind-muscle connection with the Shoulders.
  • Using excessive momentum to swing the Band rather than controlling the eccentric phase.

Muscle Anatomy

The primary driver is the Latissimus Dorsi. However, the movement also recruits Trapezius, Rhomboids, Biceps Brachii, Posterior Deltoid to maintain control of the Band.

Exercise Variations

Beginner Tips

If you are new to the Band standing rear delt row , focus on mastering the movement pattern with zero weight before adding Band.
