Band Seated Leg Extension

Instructions

1
Sit on a flat bench with back upright, feet flat on floor. Position bench at knee height. Keep torso erect against the backrest with hands gripping the bench sides for stability.
2
Secure the resistance band around the ankle and attach to a fixed low anchor point. Ensure band has slight tension in the starting position with knee bent at approximately 90 degrees.
3
Slowly lower the leg by bending the knee, allowing the foot to move downward in a controlled manner while maintaining tension on the band. Descend until knee reaches approximately 90-110 degrees of flexion.
4
Powerfully extend the leg forward by straightening the knee against band resistance, driving the foot upward and forward. Return to full knee extension or slightly short of lockout, then control the descent back to starting position.

Overview

Athletic trainers and bodybuilding coaches frequently recommend the Band Seated Leg Extension because it challenges the Quadriceps through a dynamic range of motion. By relying on Band, it reinforces proper movement patterns and builds robust strength in the Thighs region.

Benefits

  • Reduces the likelihood of Thighs injuries by reinforcing connective tissue strength.
  • Allows for a natural movement path that closely mimics functional daily activities.
  • Promotes balanced muscular development by effectively recruiting the Quadriceps and associated synergists.
  • Improves overall Thighs stability and proprioception during heavy loads.

Pro Tips

Control the eccentric (lowering) phase of the Band Seated Leg Extension for 3-4 seconds to drastically increase time under tension.

Muscle Anatomy

The primary driver is the Quadriceps. However, the movement also recruits Rectus Femoris, Vastus Lateralis, Vastus Medialis, Tibialis Anterior to maintain control of the Band.

Beginner Tips

If you are new to the Band Seated Leg Extension , focus on mastering the movement pattern with zero weight before adding Band.
