Band Narrow Grip High Row

Instructions

1
Stand facing a cable machine or resistance band anchored at chest height, positioned approximately 2-3 feet away. Feet should be shoulder-width apart with knees slightly bent. Maintain an upright torso with a slight forward lean.
2
Grasp the cable handles with both hands using a neutral or slightly pronated grip. Position hands at chest level with elbows bent at approximately 90 degrees, slightly wider than shoulder-width apart. Engage your core and maintain neutral spine alignment.
3
Slowly allow the resistance to pull your hands backward and slightly outward in a controlled manner. Let your chest stretch as your elbows flex and move toward the sides of your body. Keep the movement controlled and resist the pull of the cable throughout this phase.
4
Drive your hands forward in a pressing motion, bringing them together in front of your chest. Squeeze the chest muscles at the peak contraction. Return to the starting position with control and repeat for the desired number of repetitions.

Overview

If you want to isolate and overload the Pectoralis Major, the Band Narrow Grip High Row is an excellent addition to your routine. The mechanics of this Strength exercise specifically bias the Back, while the use of Band allows for a smooth, natural resistance curve.

Benefits

  • Reduces the likelihood of Back injuries by reinforcing connective tissue strength.
  • Promotes balanced muscular development by effectively recruiting the Pectoralis Major and associated synergists.
  • Improves overall Back stability and proprioception during heavy loads.
  • Significantly enhances the structural integrity and power of the Pectoralis Major.
  • Acts as a highly scalable Strength movement, perfect for both beginners and elite athletes.

Common Mistakes

  • Using excessive momentum to swing the Band rather than controlling the eccentric phase.
  • Rushing the repetition tempo instead of focusing on the mind-muscle connection with the Back.
  • Losing core tension, leading to poor spinal alignment and reduced power output.

Pro Tips

Think about pulling from your elbows rather than your hands to better isolate the Pectoralis Major and minimize bicep/forearm takeover.
