Band Assisted Pull-Up

Instructions

1
Stand facing a pull-up bar with feet hip-width apart. Grip the bar with hands slightly wider than shoulder-width apart using an overhand grip (palms facing away). Arms are fully extended with a slight bend in the elbows.
2
Engage your core and depress your scapulae slightly. Take a deep breath and prepare to initiate the pull by depressing and retracting your shoulder blades downward and backward.
3
Lower your body in a controlled manner by extending your arms and allowing your body to descend. Maintain an upright torso position. Continue lowering until your arms are nearly fully extended with a slight elbow bend at the bottom position.
4
Pull your body upward by driving your elbows down and back, depressing and retracting your scapulae. Lead with your chest and maintain an upright position. Continue pulling until your chin approaches or passes the bar level. Return to the starting position with control.

Overview

Focusing on the Band Assisted Pull-Up allows you to target the Latissimus Dorsi with precision. As a foundational Strength exercise, the integration of Band provides the necessary tension to trigger hypertrophy, while avoiding excessive joint strain.

Benefits

  • Significantly enhances the structural integrity and power of the Latissimus Dorsi.
  • Allows for a natural movement path that closely mimics functional daily activities.
  • Reduces the likelihood of Back injuries by reinforcing connective tissue strength.
  • Utilizes Band to create sustained mechanical tension, forcing deep muscle adaptation.

Common Mistakes

  • Losing core tension, leading to poor spinal alignment and reduced power output.
  • Using excessive momentum to swing the Band rather than controlling the eccentric phase.
  • Shrugging the shoulders or compensating with secondary muscles rather than isolating the Latissimus Dorsi.
  • Rushing the repetition tempo instead of focusing on the mind-muscle connection with the Back.

Pro Tips

Control the eccentric (lowering) phase of the Band Assisted Pull-Up for 3-4 seconds to drastically increase time under tension.

Exercise Variations
