Alternating Ankle Touch

Instructions

1
Stand upright with feet hip-width apart, arms at sides or in a relaxed position, core engaged, and chest upright. Establish neutral spine alignment.
2
Shift weight onto one leg (stance leg) while keeping the torso stable. Prepare to drive the opposite knee upward. Keep hands in a natural running position.
3
Lower the knee that was raised by extending the leg downward and backward in a controlled manner, returning to the starting position. This is the eccentric phase as the quadriceps lengthens.
4
Drive the knee upward explosively toward chest level, contracting the quadriceps and hip flexors. Return to standing position on one leg and repeat, or alternate legs in a running motion.

Overview

If you want to isolate and overload the Quadriceps, the Alternating Ankle Touch is an excellent addition to your routine. The mechanics of this Cardio exercise specifically bias the Plyometrics, while the use of Body weight allows for a smooth, natural resistance curve.

Benefits

  • Significantly enhances the structural integrity and power of the Quadriceps.
  • Allows for a natural movement path that closely mimics functional daily activities.
  • Promotes balanced muscular development by effectively recruiting the Quadriceps and associated synergists.

Common Mistakes

  • Rushing the repetition tempo instead of focusing on the mind-muscle connection with the Plyometrics.
  • Losing core tension, leading to poor spinal alignment and reduced power output.
  • Shrugging the shoulders or compensating with secondary muscles rather than isolating the Quadriceps.

Pro Tips

To maximize the Alternating Ankle Touch , actively squeeze the Quadriceps at the peak of the contraction for a full second.

Muscle Anatomy

The primary driver is the Quadriceps. However, the movement also recruits Gluteus Maximus, Hamstrings, Adductors, Rectus Abdominis to maintain control of the Body weight.

Exercise Variations

  • Dumbbell Alternating Ankle Touch
  • Cable Alternating Ankle Touch
  • Banded Alternating Ankle Touch

Beginner Tips

If you are new to the Alternating Ankle Touch , focus on mastering the movement pattern with zero weight before adding Body weight.
