Alternate Punching

Instructions

1
Stand with feet shoulder-width apart, knees slightly bent, maintaining neutral spine and upright posture with engaged core
2
Position hands at chest level with elbows bent at approximately 90 degrees, palms facing inward or downward, shoulders relaxed and packed slightly back
3
Control the movement as arms return toward the torso with elbows tracking slightly outward and downward, resisting the return without locking elbows at end range
4
Drive hands forward and outward in a pressing motion, extending arms nearly straight with a slight elbow bend, squeezing chest muscles at full extension before returning to start position

Overview

The Alternate Punching is an incredibly effective Cardio movement designed to fully engage the Pectoralis Major. By utilizing Body weight, this exercise emphasizes a deep stretch and a powerful contraction, making it a cornerstone for anyone looking to optimize their Plyometrics development.

Benefits

  • Allows for a natural movement path that closely mimics functional daily activities.
  • Reduces the likelihood of Plyometrics injuries by reinforcing connective tissue strength.
  • Improves overall Plyometrics stability and proprioception during heavy loads.
  • Significantly enhances the structural integrity and power of the Pectoralis Major.

Common Mistakes

  • Failing to achieve a full range of motion, which drastically limits Pectoralis Major engagement.
  • Using excessive momentum to swing the Body weight rather than controlling the eccentric phase.
  • Rushing the repetition tempo instead of focusing on the mind-muscle connection with the Plyometrics.

Pro Tips

If you feel this primarily in your joints rather than the Pectoralis Major, instantly lower the weight and readjust your Body weight setup.

Muscle Anatomy

The primary driver is the Pectoralis Major. However, the movement also recruits Anterior Deltoids, Triceps, Serratus Anterior, Pectoralis Minor to maintain control of the Body weight.

Exercise Variations

  • Dumbbell Alternate Punching
  • Cable Alternate Punching
  • Banded Alternate Punching

Beginner Tips

If you are new to the Alternate Punching , focus on mastering the movement pattern with zero weight before adding Body weight.
