Alternate Heel Touchers

Instructions

1
Sit on the floor with knees bent and feet flat on the ground, positioned hip-width apart. Recline back slightly with torso at approximately 45-60 degrees from vertical, keeping chest open and shoulders relaxed.
2
Place hands behind or across the chest for support. Engage core muscles before initiating movement. Ensure lower back maintains neutral curve without excessive rounding against the floor.
3
Slowly lower legs forward while extending knees, allowing the extended legs to move away from the torso. Keep movement controlled and maintain abdominal tension throughout the lowering phase to prevent lower back strain.
4
Return to starting position by flexing hips and knees, pulling legs back toward the torso using core strength. Complete the repetition by returning to the initial seated position with bent knees.

Overview

If you want to isolate and overload the Rectus Abdominis, the Alternate Heel Touchers is an excellent addition to your routine. The mechanics of this Strength exercise specifically bias the Waist, while the use of Body weight allows for a smooth, natural resistance curve.

Benefits

  • Acts as a highly scalable Strength movement, perfect for both beginners and elite athletes.
  • Promotes balanced muscular development by effectively recruiting the Rectus Abdominis and associated synergists.
  • Utilizes Body weight to create sustained mechanical tension, forcing deep muscle adaptation.

Pro Tips

Think about pulling from your elbows rather than your hands to better isolate the Rectus Abdominis and minimize bicep/forearm takeover.

Muscle Anatomy

The primary driver is the Rectus Abdominis. However, the movement also recruits Iliopsoas, Rectus Femoris, Obliquus Externus Abdominis to maintain control of the Body weight.
